My experience so far is that they rarely market you independent of the roles they have on offer. Those that will are the result of a long relationship - I guess you could think of it as customer referrals - customers will only refer you to others if they are very impressed and know you well.

Cheers

Bret

Very much necessary these days, many MNCs and mid sized ones employ them for their recruitment. Ignoring them will just close you off to many of them.
However using recruitment agencies in my opinion means you don't really care about getting the right candidate more like you've got a lot of recruitment to do, so I won't pin my hopes on a very good job.

My experience tell me that it is better to have more than 1 agency as they dont alway sell you to the employer. I was called & given a interview for the same company from 1 of the agency i registered with & not the other.

I concur with that. Some agencies have exclusive contract with their clients while some companies only use 3-5 agencies. So, it's better to register with as many good agencies as possible and you might ended up with more interviews and more options.

Let's discuss about the pros and cons of engaging recruitment agency to land you a job in Singapore.
pros -:
One get expert advice from an agency who already knows market
better placed for judgement
have contacts
rich database

Cons
expert advise are basically peovided on their needs . for eg> if they need to close certain position they will always show you a better picture which is not their.

they might be better placed for judgemnent of any sort but again their business is on their priority list

they have contacts but very seldom use them

Rich database but not for clients

most importantly,as an organisation if you are with them they mapp your people and if as an candidate you are with them they use you as an oppurtunity to earn.

I think hiring a recruitment agency when the company size is small is a good option as it gives the company with a bandwidth of resources and also provides expertise in hiring an employee.....

For big companies --- they can set up their own recruitment department and employ people to hire employees..... and they can depend on the consultants only when the requirements are in bulk and cost effective....

Since the recruitment agency charges a service fee to their client- the employing company, it will be more costly for company to make use of the recruitment agency services.

Therefore, the employed person's (who got the job with agency's help) pay will tend to be lesser than the expected as a % is given to the agency directly...thus, will be at a disadvantaged in terms of pay...

For some companies (especially smaller ones), they cannot effectively employ the right people to do the job, thus there will be a need for recruitment agencies.
So the good thing is that the company will be better able to employ the right person to do the right task at the right time.

This will assist people in development of their career needs due to right allocation of people to jobs & increase the productivity on jobs due to reduced time spend on searching for the right persons as compared to using services of recruitment agencies.

there are instances that you really need them

i believe that these agencies somewhat do their homework in assuring the

jobseekers that their contract will be properly carried out...

or if not you can easily chase or sue these agencies...

and i believe for the employers tapping an agency is a plus in pooling workers for their

company... not to mention the techniques being employed by these agencies in

scrutinizing the would be applicants

(just my thoughts though)

=)
